fiona's story

Occupational Therapist, Integrated Primary Care Teams, Brighton & Hove

Working as a volunteer gave me the knowledge, confidence and experience to gain a permanent position as an Occupational Therapy Assistant with the Trust. I worked part-time in a rehabilitation centre initially juggling a new career and a young family.

I was supported with my studies and qualified as a MSc Occupational Therapist with the University of Brighton. Once I qualified I took a temporary position via the Trust Bank, known as Staff Direct, where I worked as an Occupational Therapist on rotation. This gave me lots of experience in a short space of time working across different settings – in the community and in hospital. This experience was invaluable – I learnt so much and every day was different.

Since then I have had the pleasure to work in many different teams and settings at Sussex Community to continue my professional development. I’ve had the opportunity to work as a Band 6 on secondment which gave me the experience needed to secure a permanent Band 6 position. My experience at Sussex Community has been so positive.

I enjoy the outdoors and in particular ‘roughing it’ in muddy campsites with my children, swimming in the sea and riding my bike.
