Community Hospitals staff stories

DAWN
MATRON, HORIZON INPATIENT UNIT, HORSHAM HOSPITAL

I’ve worked for the NHS for thirty years and over that time I’ve seen a lot of changes and worked with some fabulous people.

I’m a trained mentor – it is so rewarding when I see students and staff learn, grow and develop into registered healthcare professionals.

Currently I’m involved in a new Foundation of Nursing Studies Project on Safety for Inpatients. Our team won an award for an innovative magnet system which visually communicates patients’ needs to staff from the Community Hospital Association.

I’ve recently been promoted to Matron at the Horizon Inpatient Unit at Horsham Hospital and still love my job.

JENNIFER
SENIOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, SALVINGTON LODGE HOSPITAL, WORTHING

I qualified in 2004 with a postgraduate diploma in Occupational Therapy. I currently work as a Senior Occupational Therapist at Salvington Lodge – an inpatient unit which keeps people out of acute hospital care but who need additional support before they can return back home.

The Trust has supported me to train as a Student Educator where I have been a supervisor to many students. I find this so rewarding. I’ve developed further to become one of two Practice Placement Coordinators – to develop other staff to support students.

I’ve supported a newly employed Therapy Technician to complete her Care Certificate through the Trust. She had never worked for the NHS before but with regular supervision and setting clear goals, she achieved this – I’m very proud of her.

I previously worked for another inpatient unit within the Trust and set up a successful Breakfast Group – encouraging patients to prepare their breakfast as they would do in their own homes. This was a really positive experience for patients and aided their rehabilitation to get them back home – ultimately where they prefer to be. I now hope to set this up at Salvington Lodge.

SISTER, VIKING WARD, CRAWLEY HOSPITAL

I’m a Team Leader at the Viking Ward at Crawley Hospital. I care for patients who are acutely unwell. My role brings many challenges but I also see the rewards – especially when I see patients discharged back home and who have regained independence.

I am an Infection Control Link Champion – I’m passionate in keeping a clean and tidy environment for patients and staff, and to avoid infection.

I am from India where I specialised in cardiac nursing.
